Q

Charge of the light brigade

A

• someone had blunder’d- MUST AVOID criticising officers and must be patriotic to remain poet laureate so picks on glory (suck up to queen v). Agrees with times ‘c’est n’est pas la guerre’
RHYME SCHEME SUGGESTS OTHERWISE, as blundered imperfect rhyme with hundred= exploit the word and subtly bring to attention that it was an unjust rescision. Rhyme scheme also random to reflect the random decision, with no rhyming couplets to show that their meeting with death IS NOT A JUST ENDING
• valley of death- psalm 23. MUST NOT FEAR DEATH as God with you. Justifying death as will go to heaven. Shown further through ‘do and die’- although death is inevitable, patriotism is more important. MUST APPEAR PATRIOTIC
• anaphora with sound and use of senses to show inescapable cannons and inevitable death
• while the whole world wondered= could be patriotic, DUAL MEANING of why tf would they do it
• dactyls (3 syllables, first one stressed) = cheerful song like tone juxt mass slaughter. We condemn
• WHEN TENNYSON READS IT HE STRESSES ‘KNEW’ despite dactyls to emphasise that war was wrong

• USED TO QUESTION contrasting belief about life. Grand design= Gods omnibenevolence OR Steven hawking grand design book that science explained universe. God is false hope, a way for humans to empower themselves
• maps= could be map of life= skin and veins OR idea of idealism and restriction through maps. ‘Light shines through’ nature has no regard for us.
• fall away in a sigh= fragility of materialism. mountainfolds= we must break down these ideas, and be an architect
• paper becomes a metaphor for poetry and ideas- reflected through light. Alter things- alter our perception of culture (Muslim!)
• a hand= generalist terminology
• Gods grand design isn’t war (not allah or God, just a god)
