Literary terms: repetition, superlative, emotive language.
Meaning:
- the repetition of long puts exaggeration on the time of regret and anger.
- The word too shows he has exaggerated this anger to himself and has allowed it to eat him up
- this is emphasised by the emotive language
“Long long shall I rue thee, too deeply to tell.”
when we two parted- ‘How should I ____ ___? in ___ and ____’
Literary Terms: Rhetorical question, future tense, repetition
- The poet repeats the line ‘in silence and tears’ giving the poem a circular ending. This suggests he will be stuck in a cycle, unable to let his feelings go.
- This emphasised by the change in tense, to the future tense, suggesting his feelings will not change with time passing
‘How should I greet thee? in silence and tears’

Meaning:
- The image of cold is carried into the next stanza suggesting inescapable pain.
- ‘The dew of the morning’ inverts a symbol of hope, symbolising the extent of their relationship

Meaning:
- Everything in nature is coupled together
- eternal, enduring love “meant to be”
- (we see the word mingle multiple times)

Meaning:
- Verbs imply they should be physical
- I.e. clasp and mingle wave’s clasping’ = things crashing together’

Verb, Hyperbole (worshipped)
Meaning:
- Preserving that in time.
- Repetition emphasises his obsession and his madness
- Hyperbole = egotistical

Meaning:
- Another indication to linking together
- Thinks he deserves it/ questioning himself

Oxymoron
Meaning:
Burning kiss - oxymoron show two meanings (passion and pain)
“Blushed bright beneath my burning kiss”

Literary terms: pathetic fallacy, foreshadowing, personification
Meaning:
- the pathetic fallacy reflects his angry emotions in the weather
- the weather shows nature being destructive and angry which reflects his feelings
- internal emotions being brought out
The sullen wind was soon awake
It tore the elm-tops down for spite
And did its worst to vex the lake
Sonnet 29- “My thoughts do ____ and bud/ about thee as ____ ____about a tree.”
Literary term: metaphor, extended metaphor, adjective
Meaning:
- ‘about thee as wild vines about a tree’ reflects the extended metaphor which could show their love is always growing but also constant and reliable like a tree.
- ‘Wild’ suggests they are out of control which tells us that her love is out of control.
- This could also be as saying it covers him and her love overwhelms him.
“My thoughts do twine and bud/ about thee as wild vines about a tree.”
Neutral Tones- ‘The ____ on your ____ was the _____ ____’
Literary term: oxymoron, adjective,(superlative)
Meaning:
- ‘deadest thing’ exaggerates the loss he is feeling and could be reflecting his pessimism and depression onto his prior partner.
- It also shows that his previous partner has caused this loss as throughout the poem and this quote all the negative imagery is linked to her.
‘The smile on your mouth was the deadest thing’
Neutral tones-‘A few leaves ___ on the -____ ____/ (surface of ground)
– They had ___ from an ___ and were grey’
Literary term: Metaphor, colour imagery, natural imagery, adjective.
Meaning:
- the first line of the quote uses a metaphor comparing the ground (starving sod) to there relationship saying it is dead
- taking the nature of falling leaves turning to dark imagery of ‘ash and grey’ uses a dark tree and colour to show that all that around him/ them is dead and depressing.
‘A few leaves lay on the starving sod/ (surface of ground)
– They had fallen from an ash and were grey’
Eden Rock-‘I had __ ____ that it would be___ ___’
Literary term: short sentence, separated final stanza, stanza break (disrupt the form)
Meaning:
- the last line being separated from the rest of the poem, disrupts the poem’s structure.
- The whole poem is him describing his family however the last line is about him which shows a metaphoric and spiritual separation between him and his family.
‘I had not thought that it would be like this’
Eden Rock-“ They are ____ ___ ___ somewhere ___ ____ ____.”
Literary term:
Meaning:
- The phrase eden rock is religiously symbolic of paradise or heaven and the verb beyond shows that they are in heaven and they are ‘waiting for him there’
- This is an elegy which is a mournful poem.
“They are waiting for me somewhere beyond Eden Rock”
follower - “I was a _____, _____, ______,/
Yapping always. But today/ it is my ______ ____ ___ ____”.
Literary Term: Rule of three.
Caesura (“always. But”)
Meaning:
- Emphasises that he’s not very good.
- Caesura makes sudden change in pace.
- The reliability of his father has stopped abruptly.
“I was a nuisance, tripping, falling,/
Yapping always. But today/ it is my father who keeps stumbling”.
