Exact Rhyme
Repetition of same or similar sounds in words usually at the ends of lines of poetry
Near Rhyme
This type of rhyme is imperfect, where the sound is close, or the words look like they should rhyme, but pronunciation dictates otherwise
Internal Rhyme
The rhyming of words placed in the middle and at the end of a line of poetry
Cacophony
Using a series of harsh sounding words in order to convey an unpleasant atmosphere. Using sounds such as b, p, t, d, k
Euphony
Using a series of liquid sounds such as w, s, i, v, m… in order to convey a pleasant atmosphere
Assonance
Repetition of vowel sounds in consecutive non-rhyming words
Consonance
Repetition of consonant sounds in consecutive non-rhyming words.
Onomatopoeia
The use of words that sound like what they mean such as “buzz”
Alliteration
The repetition of initial sounds in consecutive words as in “peter
End-stopped line
Occurs when a line of poetry ends with punctuation forcing the reader to naturally pause
Enjambment
The continuation of a thought from one line to the next without terminal punctuation (poetic run-on)
Oxymoron
Placing two words side by side that contradict each other. “Jumbo shrimp, living dead”
Apostrophe
A speaker directly addresses someone/something that isn’t there and cannot answer back.
Hyperbole
Huge exaggeration used to intensify the moment.
Paradox
A seeming contradiction.
