Words that sound the same as what they represent
Onamatopoeia
The use of the same letter at the beggining of words that are close
Alliteration
To give an inanimate object human characteristics
Personification
To describe something ‘as’ or ‘like’ something else
Simile
The use the same word/phrase more than once
Repitition
Comparing two things saying they are eachother
Metaphor
The continuation of a sentence without a pause beyond the end of a line
Enjambment
This describes the beat of a poem
Rhythm
When the lines of poetry end with the same sound
Rhyme
Groups of lines in a poem (a verse)
Stanza
When vowel sounds within words are the same or very similar
Assonance
Point at which poem changes mood, time etc
Pivot (Volta)
A pause within a line of poetry to give emphasis
Caesura
Use of words or phrases that are often sarcasic and or humerous
Irony
Soft, breathy sounds: s, z, th, f
Fricatives
Hard, explosive sounds: p, t, k, b, g, d
Plosives
Sounded with a hissing effect s, sh
Sibilance
Expressing the highest or very high degree of a quality
Superlative
Two things being seen or placed close toghether with contrasing effects
Juxtaposition
Be a warning or indication of a future event
Foreshadowing
A group of words with the same topic, function or form
Lexical Set
Words that are very old or old-fashioned
Archaisms
The most importaint information in a clause or sentence is placed at the end
