Allusion
Unacknowledged reference and quotations that authors assume their readers will recognise.
Assonance
The repetition of a vowel sound in non-rhyming words.
Enjambment
The continuation of a sentence or clause
Hyperbole
Exaggeration for effect, or an overstatement.
Imagery
A strong description to convey a mental picture.
Juxtaposition
Using two opposites as contrasting images for effect
Metaphor
A comparison between two unlike things, this describes one thing as if it were something else.
Meter
The “beat” of the poem, formed by the poem’s use of syllables and structure, such as stressed and unstressed combinations.
Mood
How the text encourages the reader feel.
Onomatopoeia
A blending of consonant and vowel sounds designed to imitate or suggest the activity being described.
Oxymoron
Two contradictory words are used together in one phrase.
Personification
Attributing human characteristics to non-human things or abstractions.
Repetition
Repeating a word or phrase for effect.
Rhyme
The repetition of identical concluding syllables in different words, most often at the end of lines
Simile
Comparison of two things using ‘like’ or ‘as’.
