Words starting with the same letter repeated in the same sentence or line.
e.g. Playful pretty puppy

Adds melody to writing. Makes it memorable.
What is a simile? Give an example.
Comparing things using “like” or “as”
e.g. The church was like a castle
Why would you use a simile?
It creates unique imagery. Gets the reader thinking.
What is a metaphor? Give an example.
Where something replaces something else in a text to give deeper meaning.
e.g. Love is fire

Metaphors offer deeper meaning, which gets the reader thinking.
What is assonance? Give an example.
Repeated vowel sounds in the same sentence/line.
e.g. any amount of apples are devoured at Amelia’s house.
What is an extended metaphor?
Metaphors that link a deeper idea throughout.
Why would you use assonance?
It is memorable. If a broad vowel is used, it slows the reader down. If a slender vowel is used, it can speed the reader up.
What does figurative mean?
It is the playful use of language.
e.g. alliteration, sibilance, onomatopoeia
What does literal mean?
It is the language of information e.g. a news article
What is consonance? Give an example.
Repeated consonants used in a line or sentence.
e.g. Lily likes lovely little lollies.
Why is consonance used?
Memorable and musical. Can be pleasant or uncomfortable sounds.
