Narrative poetry
Poetry that tells a story to entertain
Lyrical poetry
Short poem of personal feelings and emotions, which may or may not be set to music and often involves the use of regular meter
Humorous poetry
Poetry that deals with amusing happenings
Free Verse poetry
Poetry composed of rhymed or unrhymed lines that have no set patterns
Quatrain
Poem of 4 lines. Lines two and four rhyme; lines one and three may or may not rhyme
Cinquain
Has five lines: line one is one word (title); line 2 is two words that describes the title; line 3 is three words that tell the action; line 4 is four words that express the feeling; line 5 is one word that recalls the title
Shape poem
Poetry written in the shape or form of an object
Acrostic poem
Poetry that certain letters, usually the first in each line form a word or message read in a sequence
Epitaph
Written to praise or to reflect on the life of the deceased person
Haiku
Japanese poem composed of three unrhymed lines of five, seven, and five syllables
Limerick
Short humorous poem of consisting of five lines: lines 1, 2, and five of a limerick have seven to ten syllables and rhyme with one another. Lines 3 and 4 have five to seven syllables and also rhyme with eachother
Epic poetry
A long narrative poem usually chronicling the deeds of a folk hero and written using that’s dramatic and narrative literary techniques
Sonnet
A lyric poem that consist of 14 lines that usually have one or more conventional rhyme schemes
Diamanté
A diamanté has seven lines: line one is a one word subject that is opposite of line 7; line two is two adjectives which describe the subject in line one; line three is three verbs relating to the subject in line one; line four is two nouns related to the subject of line one, followed by two nouns related to the subject in line 7, line 5 is three verbs related to the subject in line 7; line 6 is two adjectives which describes the subject in line seven; line 5 is a one word subject that is opposite of line 1
