Repeated sounds within consecutive words - similar to alliteration.
What is consonance ?
Consonant sounds at the end of words for a similar effect to alliteration.
What is a cacophony ?
Repeated hard or harsh sounds to make a discordant sound.
What is repeating words throughout a poem called ?
Repetition, to draw focus and add emphasis.
What is rhyme ?
Words with similar ending sounds to create a flow.
What actually is rhythm ?
The organisation of words to create a noticeable sound or pace with a clear beat. Can include structure of the work and often measured in syllables.
What are some common rhythms ?
Iamb / iambic ( / ), trochee / trochaic ( / ), anapest / anapestic ( _ / ), dactyl / dactylic ( / _ ) and spondee / spondaic ( // )
What is an allegory ?
Something symbolic, often a story that represents larger things or ideas.
What is allusion ?
Referring to something well known, could be anything fitting the context of the poem.
What is it called when a word or idea could mean multiple things ?
Ambiguity, often used to provoke thought and explore the different meanings.
What is an analogy ?
Comparing something unfamiliar to something familiar to help readers understand.
What is a cliché ?
Something which is over used and becomes expected or cheesy.
What are associations that go with a word called ?
Connotations.
What does it mean to denote something ?
To write the literal definition of something without having the reader reading too deeply into it.
