Alliteration
a stylistic device in which consecutive words or words that occur together in a series all begin with the same first consonant letter or sound (repeated starting sounds)
Cacophonous
harsh and unpleasant combination of words (harsh consonants)
Connotation
associations and emotional overtones attached

Diction
The poet’s choice of words which can be formal or informal
Euphonious
the pleasing and harmonious arrangement of sounds (alliteration, assonance)
Extended Metaphor
a comparison between two unlike things developing and elaborated upon throughout multiple lines or stanzas
Free Verse
poetry without a fixed pattern of meter and rhyme (has no rules)
Iambic Pentameter
unstressed + stressed (two syllables), 5 stressed syllables per line
Imagery
language used for visual illustrations or representation of a sensory experience; giving a person the experience of something through description of the 5 senses; the second type of imagery also uses devices like simile and mynotomy
Line
could be used for pacing or emphasizing certain ideas
Metaphor
The distinct comparison where one thing or idea substitutes for another “A Verb Like Be”
Meter
the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables
Onomatopoeia
a word which imitates the natural sound of a thing
Personification
attributing human characteristics to nonhuman things
Poetry
literary work focusing on the expression of feelings and ideas through rhythm
Repetition
repeating words or phrases
Rhyme
a repetition of similar sounds in two or more words (especially common at the ends of words)

pleasing to the ear and also lends a sense of rhythm and order to the language
Perfect Rhyme
when stressed syllables along with all subsequent syllables
Slant Rhyme/Imperfect Rhyme
involves the repetition of similar sounds that are not quite as precise as perfect rhyme
