Antithesis
Using two opposites to highlight or contrast the feature of both. Example; Love is an ideal thing, marriage a real thing
Apostrophe
Addressing someone or something that is absent, abstract, or inanimate. Example; O’holy night
Allusion
Referring to a well-known event or person from history or literature. Example; My sister and I fight like it’s World War 1.
Euphemism
Use of a gentler word in place of an offensive or harsh one.
Example; I dislike you
Alliteration
The repetition of sounds at the beginning of words.
Example; Scarlett sizzling sausages
Hyperbole
A Hyperbole is an extreme exaggeration used to make a point. Example; I’m so hungry I could eat a horse.
Simile
A simile is comparing two unlike things using the word like or as. Example; My feet smelt like mouldy cheese.
Onomatopoeia
Onomatopoeia is words that mimic sounds. Example KAPOW, BANG
Personification
Personification is giving human characteristics to something non-human. Example; My tie ran away from me.
Imagery
Imagery is words that appeal to the five senses: taste, touch, sight, sound and smell. Example; The smell of onions water my eyes.
Oxymoron
Oxymoron is the use of unexpected, unmatched or opposite terms. Example; The sisters relationship was bittersweet.
Metaphor
Metaphor a direct comparison of two unlike things using the verbs to be. Example; The snow is a white blanket.
