Alliteration
The repetition of sounds at the beginning of words.
Eg. Amy awed Aysel’s amazing awkward style.
Allusion
Referring to a well known event or person from history or literature. Eg. The sports field was like a battlefield in World War 2
Antithesis
Using two opposites to highlight or contrast the features of both. Eg. She was weirdly conformed.
Euphemism
Use of a gentler word in the place of an offensive or harsh one.
Eg. He had sadly passed.
Imagery
Words that appeal to the five senses: Taste, touch, sight, sound and smell.
Eg. Luscious silk and red velvet dress had smelled like aged wine and felt like a thousand clouds in my hands.
Hyperbole
An extreme exaggeration used to make a point.
Eg. Today was absolutely, 100% the worst day of my entire life!
Apostrophe
Addressing someone or something that is absent, abstract or inanimate.
Eg. Nothin’
Metaphor
A direct comparison of two unlike things using the verb to be (is, were, are, was)
Eg. She WAS a giraffe.
Onomatopoeia
A word that mimics a sound.
Eg. KER-PLONK!
Oxymoron
The use of unexpected, unmatched, or opposite terms.
Eg. Act naturally.
Personification
Giving human characteristics to something non human.
Eg. The greedy flame grew three metres tall.
Simile
Comparing two things using the words like or as.
Eg. Her hair was AS greasy has a swimming pool filled with canola oil.
