Stanza
Verses (paragraphs). It introduces a new thought about a subject.
Rhyming Schemes
Identified by using the alphabet on each line of a poem. If a line rhymes then it will have the same letter.
Poetry Styles
There are several poetry styles. AABBA=Limerick. The first letter of each line spelling a word=Acrostic. No structure or rhyming scheme=Free Verse. Explores Australian identity and its landscape=Bush Ballad. Written to show disapproval about a serious issue=Disapproval Poems.
Poetic Devices
A technique that poets use in poems to express their ideas and emotions.
Assonance
A repeating sound of a vowel in a series of words. Assonance creates the rhythm in the poem. The ends of the assonance words are usually different.
Alliteration
A repetition of a constant sound at the start of a word. It also creates rhythm for the poem.
Onomatopoeia
When the word makes a sound it’s describing. Adds auditory qualities for the poem.
Simile
It is describing something by comparing using like or as.
Metaphor
Describes something by comparing or saying its something else.
Personification
Giving a non-human a human trait.
Repetition
Repeating a word or phrase.
Iambic Pentameter
The rhythmic pattern of the line of poetry like five heartbeats.
Hyperbole
An exaggeration or overstatement.
Extended Metaphor
A metaphor that goes over a course of many lines or the entire poem.
Symbolism
When a colour or symbol represents something.
