Stanza
Verses (paragraphs). Introduces a new thought about a subject.
Rhyming Schemes
If a poem has a rhyming scheme, it can be identified using the letters of the alphabet.
Poetry Styles
Limerick (A rhyming poem with the pattern of a, a, b, b, a)
Acrostic (the first letter of each line spells out a word)
Free Verse (no structure of rhyming scheme)
Dream Time (explores Australian identity and its landscape)
Disapproval (written to show disapproval about a serious issue)
Assonance
Assonance is the repetition of a vowel sound within a series of words.
Alliteration
Alliteration is the repetition of a consonant sound, usually for emphasis humour and to create an image for the reader. It can also create rhythm in a poem.
Iambic pentameter
a line of verse with five metrical feet, each consisting of one short (or unstressed) syllable followed by one long (or stressed) syllable, for example Two households, both alike in dignity.
Repetition
the action of repeating something that has already been said or written.
Rhyme
correspondence of sound between words or the endings of words, especially when these are used at the ends of lines of poetry.
Hyperbole
exaggerated statements or claims not meant to be taken literally.
Metaphor
a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable.
Extended metaphor
The term extended metaphor refers to a comparison between two unlike things that continues throughout a series of sentences in a paragraph or lines in a poem. It is often comprised of more than one sentence and sometimes consists of a full paragraph.
Simile
a figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind, used to make a description more emphatic or vivid (e.g. as brave as a lion).
Onomatopoeia
the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named.
Symbolism
the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities.
Personification
the attribution of a personal nature or human characteristics to something non-human, or the representation of an abstract quality in human form.
