A comparison using like, as, or than
Metaphor
A comparison. It states that one object is something else
Personification
Giving life/human characteristics to an inanimate object
Apostrophe
Addressing directly an inanimate object as if it were alive or an absent person as if he or she were present
Onomatopoeia
The sound of a word suits the meaning
Alliteration
Two or more consecutive words, each starting with the same sound
Symbol
When one thing has more than one meaning, or represents something else
Metonymy
Referring to the accompaniment of a thing rather than the thing itself. “The pen is mightier than the sword”
Synecdoche
Where a part is used to represent the whole, “All hands on deck”
Rhetorical
Question; asking in such a way that the answer, being obvious, is not required
Euphemism
Calling an unpleasant thing by a pleasant name
Hyperbole
Deliberate exaggeration
Understatement
The deliberate downplaying of some fact or opinion
Oxymoron
Contradicting ideas used to express one meaning
Assonance
Repetition of vowel sounds in a line
