What is metaphor?
An implied comparison
What is personification?
The treatment of an object or quality as if it were a person
What is apostrophe?
Addressing a person, thing or quality as if it were present and could hear
What is hyperbole?
The deliberate exaggeration to emphasise an emotional effect
What is alliteration?
The repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words
What is consonance?
Repetition of consonant sounds anywhere in words, not just the beginning
What is assonance?
Repetition of vowel sounds in words
What is a simile?
A comparison of two things using like or as
What is end rhyme?
Use of rhyming words at the end of two or more lines of poetry
What is internal rhyme?
Use of rhyming words within a line of poetry
What is onomatopoeia?
Use of words that sound very much like the noise they name
What is repetition?
Technique of repeating a word or phrase for rythmn or emphasis
What is rythm?
The way a poem flows from one idea to the next.
What is meter?
The rhythm created in poetry by the repetition of similar units of sound patterns
What is iambic parameter?
A five foot line of iambic meter. This is the most common meter in the English language
