Alliteration
Repetition of initial sounds in a series of words for example “sally swiftly sailed the shimmering sea”
Hyperbole
Exaggeration used to create a specific effect for example “ i’m so hungry. I could eat a horse.”
malapropism
The mistaken use of a word in place of a similar Sounding one often untentionally to create amusement. For example “dance a flamingo.”
Metaphor
A figure of speech used to imply rather than directly express a comparison between two objects. For example “the sun was a furnace.”
Simile
I figure of speech used to directly express a comparison between two objects. For example “ her smile was as bright as the sun.”
Onomatopoeia
A word whose sound resembles what it describes for example “snap crackle pop buzz”
Oxymoron
An expression that combines contradictory or opposite ideas. For example “ bittersweet.”
Paradox
When a character says something that sounds contrary or absurd but which holds truth to it. For example “fair is foul”
Personification
A figure of speech of which a quality or idea is represented by human quality’s of nature is portrayed as having human feelings, intelligence or emotions. For example “ cupid is a personification of love. The cruel crawling sea.”
Pun
A play on words, used artfully by Shakespeare for comedy, and often creates irony. It is the humorous use of words which are formed alike or sound alike but have different meanings. For example “ broken pencils are pointless.”
Understatement
Weakly stating or expressing feelings or ideas for effect. For example, “swimming with those unpleasant sharks might be a bit unpleasant.”
