What is a Alliteration?
The repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of a number of words.
What is a Oxymoron?
A deliberate contraction within a nightmare ‘beautiful nightmare’
What is a Simile?
A comparison of two different objects using the words ‘like’ or ‘as’.
What is a metaphor?
A comparison of two different items where you say that one thing is something else.
What is Personification?
Giving a human characteristic on a non human object.
What is Onomatopoeia?
Words that sound like sounds.
What is Anaphora?
Repeating the same few words at the start of a number of sentences.
What is Enjambment?
When the meaning of a sentence runs on from one line or stanza to the next.
What is Caesura?
A deliberate pause in the middle of a line of poetry. Can be achieved by a full stop, comma or hyphen.
What is a Stanza?
The name given to a verse in a poem. The equivalent to a paragraph in prose.
What is a Volta?
The ‘turning point’ in a poem. When the mood or argument changes dramatically.
What is a In media res?
Starting in the middle of a action.
What is a rhyme?
Words that sound the same.
What is a Couplet?
A pair of successive lines that rhyme.
What is a Juxtaposition?
Placing two very different images close together in order to emphasise their differences.
