Allusion
A reference to a historical event, myth, literature, or the Bible.
Apostrophe
The poet addresses someone as absent as though present / someone dead as though alive / something inanimate as though inanimate.
Conceit
An unusual metaphor
Euphemism
A form of understatement - a softer/less harsher description is used
Hyperbole
An exaggeration - overstating something
Imagery
Forming mental images using all the 5 senses
Metaphor
Qualities of one object is ascribed to another object
Metonymy
An object that is closely related to an idea substituted for it
Oxymoron
Two words of opposite meaning are placed next to each other
Paradox
A statement that contradicts itself
Personification
Giving objects human-like qualities
Pun
A play on words (used in jokes)
Simile
A direct comparison of 2 unlike objects using ‘like’, ‘as’, ‘as if’, or ‘than’
Synecdoche
A form of metonymy - a part of an object is used instead of the entire thing (or the reverse)
Understatement
Saying something is less than it actually is
