Alegory
narrative or descritpion where certain events and characters are represented by certain events, characters or objects.
(ex.: Animal farm)
Anaphora
Repetition of same phrase at the begining of each line, during the whole poem or just a part of it
Metonomy
A noun to describe another..
ex: the pen is mightier than the sword.” The pen is a metonymy for writing and the sword is a metonymy for fighting.
Synecdoche
the representation of an object with only a distinct part of the object
ex: a car as a “nice set of wheels”
Echo
Antithesis
contrasting ideas next to each other to create an effect
ex: go big or go home
no pain no gain
Analogy
ex:As cold water is to a thirsty soul,
So is good news from a far country
allusion
ex: His smile is like kryptonite to me.
Apostrophe
adresses a subject not present
denotation
ex: hot, means heat but used to describe attractivness
Aliteration
Alliteration is the repetition of consonant sounds in the same line such as /f/ sound in “In Flanders fields,
Imagery
used to make the readers perceive things with their five senses.
ex: “In Flanders fields, the poppies blow”, “sunset glow”
Symbolism
Symbolism is using symbols to signify ideas and qualities that are different from their literal meanings.
ex: puppies” as dead souls
Enjambment
defined as thought in a verse that does not come to an end at a line break; rather, it rolls over to the next line.
ex.: “To you from failing hands we throwThe torch; be yours to hold it high.”
Personnification
Gives human attribute to animate or non-animate elements of nature
ex: “The sparrow talked to us”
