Ozymandias

A

The traveller meets the poet and tells him about a statue. The statue was of a king who ruled over a past civilisation/ life. The king was powerful but no he is not. The statue has fallen down and crumbled.

A

The narrator is wandering in the streets of London. He comments on what he sees. he sees that people are suffering and the people in power seem to be the cause. They don’t care about the poor people they only care about themselves.

” every every every “ - stanza 2, each sentence says every = repetition and this affects everyone and there’s no relief from it.

“Marriage hearse” - oxymoron, this links a happy image into death. Suggests that everything has been destroyed.

The perlude

A

Begins on a summer evening, the narrator finds a boat tied to a tree. He unites The boat and takes it onto the lake. The narrator seems happy and calm as he is taking in the wonderful scenery. However a mountain appears and narrator seems scared of its power and size. He goes home but his view on nature has changed

A

The duke shows a portrait of the Duchess to a visitor. The Duke was angry at the duchesses behaviour towards everyone else, she was very friendly towards everyone and she treated him the same. He stopped this, which hints that he had her murdered. They both walk away, and the visitor had come to arrange his next marriage

The charge of the light brigade

A

That was a Battle between the British and the Russian forces during the Crimean war. There was a misunderstanding which meant that the light brigade ordered their soldiers into the enemy. The British had swords whereas the Russians had guns. Many British soldiers were killed. The soldiers knew that they were heading strait for the enemy ,but they followed orders.

Exposure

A

The soldiers are in the trenches in World War one. The soldiers are awake at night because it is very cold and they are scared to fall asleep in case the enemy attacks. The nature seems to be their enemy because it is freezing cold, and windy. The soldiers imagine going home, and they believe that sacrificing themselves is helping keep their love ones alive

A

The narrator describes how community thinks they are well prepared for a storm that is coming. Their confidence begins to disappear as the storm develops. In the end everybody is afraid as the storm hits the island.

A

It’s a single soldiers experience as it gets ready to charge towards the enemy lines. The poet describes his thoughts, actions as he tries to stay alive. He is afraid, which is replaced with patriotic ideas that he held before the violence began again.

A

A group of soldiers shoot a man who is running away from a bank raid. His death is described in graphic detail. The soldier isn’t sure whether he was armed or not, this then haunts him in his memory, he tries to get rid of it by using drugs and drinking alcohol. He feels as if he will always have blood on his hands.

Poppies

A

This poem is about a mother who describes her son leaving home, to join the army. She talks about how she feels about him leaving and that she is scared. She is sad, lonely, and scared. She describes helping him smarten his uniform, when he leaves she goes to places that remind her of him. She wishes for him to be a toddler again when she could keep him safe.

A

A war photographer returns from a war zone, he is in his darkroom developing pictures he has taken. He remembers the suffering that people were suffering. He thinks that when people back in England see the photos, they won’t really care about them and will forget about it the next day.

The emigree

A

The poem talks about a city in the narrator left as a child. She is a positive view on it. However the city seems to be under attack. “They” accuse and threaten the speaker. The city might not be a real place, it might represent a time, person, or emotion that the speaker has been forced to leave.

The narrator talks about his identity and how it links to his knowledge of history. He was taught British history but doesn’t understand why he doesn’t know about people from other cultures, who also do great things. At the end he says he is going to create his own identity based on his heritage

Kamikaze

A

Kamikaze is about a Japanese pilot who is about to set off on his suicide mission. He was used towards the end of World War II. They flew planes on suicide missions into enemy ships. He didn’t complete his mission and his daughter imagines it’s because he saw all the beauty he would leave behind. He was shocked when he returned home, because his family acted as if he was dead and invisible
