Rhyme
Rhyme is similar sounding words in poetry or song.(a musical quality.)
rhythm
Rhythm is the way beats are arranged in a poem or song.
A title
A title is the name given to a poem or song.
Narrative poetry
Narrative poetry is poetry that tells a story.
Tone+mood
Tone is a poet’s attitude towards the subject matter of a poem. Mood is the feeling or atmosphere in a poem.
Imagery
Imagery is descriptive language that appeals to our senses (sight, sound, smell, taste and touch).
Repetition
Poets use repetition to emphasise their point or to draw attention to an important theme.
The theme
The theme is the main message or idea explored in a poem. Poems can have more than one theme. Some of the themes in the poetry you will explore in this unit include youth, love and nature.
Alliteration
Alliteration is a sound effect created when words that begin with the same letter are placed beside or close to one another in a sentence.
Sibilance
Sibilance is a sound effect that occurs when ‘s’ or ‘sh’ sounds are created in words that are placed close together.
Personification
Personification is when an object is described as if it has feelings and behaves in a human way.
Lyric poetry
Lyric poetry is written in a simple style and expresses emotions or personal feelings.
Lyric poems usually rhyme, creating rhythm and a musical quality.
Similes
Similes compare one thing to another, using the words ‘like’ or ‘as’ or ‘than’.
Metaphors
Metaphors describe something as though it is something else.
Hyperbole
Hyperbole is when a poet uses exaggeration to get their point across.
