Metaphor
A creative comparison that, for rhetorical effect, directly refers to one thing by mentioning another.
Analogy
A creative comparison in which one relationship between two ideas is used to describe another.
Simile
A creative comparison that makes a connection between two concepts using the words ‘like’ or ‘as’.
Extended Metaphor
A metaphor in which multiple points of comparison are made over the course an entire work.
Rhyme
when a word at the end of a poetic line ends with the same sound as a word at the end of another line.
Rhyme Scheme
Patterns of rhyming that is denoted using letters
Alliteration
The repetition of sounds at the beginning of words in a series.
Assonance
the repetition of vowel sounds in a series of non-rhyming words
Consonance
The repetition of consonant sounds in series of non-rhyming words, particularly at the end of the word.
