Can you use equipment even if you don’t know how to use it? Is it alright to forget reading the instruction and just start using the equipment?

A

NO. DON’T USE ANY EQUIPMENT UNTIL YOU HAVE BEEN SHOWN HOW TO USE IT CORRECTLY and SAFELY. DON’T USE it UNLESS you UNDERSTAND the INSTRUCTIONS.

Is it okay to walk into the shop and wear loose clothes freely? It’s not like anything is wrong..

A

FALSE. Keep clothes TUCKED IN or wear a SHOP APRON. Keep sleeves NEATLY ROLLED UP. Loose clothing can get CAUGHT in a machine and cause an injury.

Do I have to tie my hair?? I mean, it’s so long and pretty.. it wont get tangled.

A

NO. If your hair is long, TIE IT BACK or WEAR A CAP over it. LONG HAIR can get CAUGHT in a moving MACHINE.

ABSOLUTELY NOT. REMOVE LOOSE BRACELETS, WATCHES and NECKLACES before you do any work in the shop. WATCHES and JEWELRY SHOULD NOT be WORN in the shop.

A

Wear PROTECTIVE SHOES. Preferably HARD SHOES or BOOTS with RUBBER SOLES and HEELS. DO NOT WEAR SANDALS in the shop.

When can I wear gloves? When is it wrong to wear them? I’m confused :-(

A

Do NOT wear gloves when you use the tools or operate any equipment. The ONLY time it is “OK” to WEAR GLOVES is when you are HANDLING ROUGH LUMBER or HOT METAL.

Wear a DUST MASK when WORKING around a LOT of WOOD DUST. WOOD DUST can be HARMFUL if inhaled in large amounts.

What do I do when there is a spill??

A

CLEAN UP SPILLS IMMEDIATELY. DON’T LEAVE ANYTHING ON THE FLOOR that SOMEONE could SLIP ON.

What do I use in the paint booth??

A

Use FINISHING MATERIALS, THINNERS, OR other OILY/FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS ONLY in the PAINT BOOTH.

Uhhh.. what do I do with used rags..? What happens when I leave it out?

A

KEEP USED RAGS in an APPROVED, COVERED METAL CONTAINER. DAMP, OILY RAGS CAN IGNITE THROUGH SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION. The HEAT produced by OXIDATION is ENOUGH to START A FIRE.

A

RESPECT the safety zones. STAY AWAY from anyone operating power equipment. DONT talk to them or distract them in any way. DONT let anyone distract you when you are using equipment.

Aisles and what about them?

A

Aisles have to be KEPT CLEAR and FREE of LITTER, SCRAPS, and MATERIALS. DONT leave anything on the floor that could be TRIPPED over or slipped on.

Fire extinguishers?

A

KNOW where the FIRE EXTINGUISHERS ARE LOCATED and KNOW how to USE THEM BEFORE there is an emergency. (extra: already know how to use one and have background knowledge)

A

When you approach a machine to use it, make sure the person who used it before you TURNED IT OFF. Make sure it is completely STOPPED!

A

NO. NO ACCEPTIONS. Keep work benches CLEAR and ORGANIZED. DON’T pile up tools and don’t lay tools down so they hang over the edge of the bench.

A

VISES SHOULD BE KEPT CLOSED when they’re NOT IN USE.

Is using my hands to clear a table after use? I mean, what possibly could go wrong?

A

NO! ALWAYS use a brush or a rag to CLEAR AWAY sawdust and scraps. NEVER use your HANDS to wipe off a surface!!

A

USE the RIGHT TOOL for the job. USE the TOOL ONLY for what it is DESIGNED to do and use the RIGHT size tool.

Where do the edge of tools get faced when I carry them?

A

Carry POINTED or SHARP tools with THE POINT or EDGE HELD DOWN TOWARD the FLOOR. This will HELP AVOID INJURIES if you bump into something or if someone bumps into you.

Now how do you hold a tool in general?

A

When you hold a tool, HOLD IT BY THE HANDLE. When you hand someone a tool, hold it so they can TAKE it by the handle.

What do I do when I’m done with a tool?

A

When you are finished with a tool, return it to ITS PROPER STORAGE AREA. Return it TO the TOOL ROOM, TOOL RACK, OR CABINET WHERE IT BELONGS.

How do I lift stuff?

A

Lift with YOUR LEGS, NOT WITH YOUR BACK. Lifting improperly or carelessly can cause SEVERE back injuries.

Is it alright to have wet hands and touch a cord?

A

NOOOO!!! BE sure your hands are DRY and that you are standing on a DRY floor when you use ELECTRICAL devices.

Is it alright to use slightly damaged cords? Or in other words- we don’t have to check them do we?

A

WE MUST CHECK THEM SILLY!! Check the condition of the power cord. DONT use the equipment if the insulation on the CORD is DAMAGED, CUT, or FRAYED. Tell the instructor.

It’s alright to talk to others and be absent minded when coming into the shop, right? I mean, I was sick and light headed once, but I still went anyways…

A

WHY? THIS IS WRONG. CONCENTRATE on what you are doing; give it your FULL attention. If you don’t feel well or if there is a reason you can’t concentrate, TELL THE INSTRUCTOR.

Heavy materials? Help?

A

If you are handling large or heavy materials, get someone to HELP you. ASK someone to help when you cut a large piece of material on a machine.

A

WAIT, SLOW DOWN!! Work at a SAFE speed. DONT rush or hurry through a project. Working too fast is DANGEROUS and will result in poor craftsmanship.

Is playing around allowed?

A

DONT fool around in the shop! There are NO exceptions to this. DONT EVER PLAY around in the shop. NO horseplay!

How to disconnect a power cord?

A

When you disconnect the power cord, PULL the PLUG; DONT YANK ON THE CORD. Hold the plug and pull it out of the outlet.

I don’t wanna use the guards. I’m a skilled cutter!!

A

YOU ARE WRONG!! Use ALL the recommended guards and safety devices on the power equipment. NEVER remove a guard without the instructor’s permission.

Do I have to stop everything when I make changes with power equipment?

A

YES! Disconnect power equipment anytime you need to make MAJOR changes or adjustments or if it is not working properly. Unplug the tool.

Can I make adjustment when the machine is on?

A

NO! Turn off thee machine anytime you make minor changes or aadjustments. NEVER adjust equipment while it’s running unless it is part of the adjustment. WAIT for it to come to a COMPLETE STOP before you make the adjustment.

It’s okay to quickly go grab something from my backpack and come back to finish using the machine! It wouldn’t hurt.. right!?

A

HECK NO!!! DO NOT at any time leave a machine unattended while it is turned on. TURN IT OFF and stay with it until it comes to a complete stop.
