PNF Techniques Flashcards
Rhythmic Rotation
Slow passive rotation to extremity or trunk to relax patient at stiff portion of range
Stabilizing Reversals (Alternating Isometrics)
pt resists isometric contraction of one pattern then eases off–>pt immediately isometric contraction of antagonist pattern then eases off
Stability technique to be completed in all planes
Rhythmic Stabalizations
Co-activation: recruiting all of the muscles around the joint with gradually increasing resistance
Dynamic Reversals (slow reversals)
pt actively moves from one direction (agonist direction) into the opposite direction (antagonist direction) w/out pause or relaxation
-QS can be applied at beginning of range
Combination of Isotonics (Agonist Reversal)
Begin with the concentric contraction into agonist direction then perform eccentric contraction into antagonist direction “don’t let me move you down fast. “ Begin in range were patient has the most Strength
-good for patients with choreoathetosis
Replication (hold relax active movement)
Passively move patient into short in range–> patient holds against resistance–> passively move patient into lengthened range and apply a QS–> patient contracts concentrically through range of motion into shortened position
-facilitates active movement in and out of positions
Contact-Relax
Passively move patient to range limitation–> PT provides a resistive force into the antagonist direction WITH rotation. Resistance is held for 8 to 10 counts
-helps increase ROM
Hold relax
Patient positioned or actively moves to point of limitation and holds for 8 to 10 counts –>then patient actively moves into new range. repeat as needed
Repeated stretch (Repeated Contractions)
Patient actively moves through week pattern and completes an isometric hold at the point of weakness in there range quick stretch is then applied as patient continues through the range. Once range is completed resistance is applied to antagonist with a quick stretch and isometric hold at end range
Timing for emphasis
A week component of the pattern is emphasized in a quick stretch can be applied if needed resistance of the stronger (more proximal) component to promote your radiation and overflow typically at mid range
Rhythmic Initiation
Slow rhythmic movements that are passive at first then advance to AAROM–>AROM
