PNF Techniques Flashcards
What is the purpose of Normal Timing (NT)?
To develop normal coordination of the components of the movement pattern when there is adequate strength but sequencing is impaired
What is the progression of Normal Timing (NT)?
Work more distally first
May begin at midrange of pattern to recruit isotonic activity of distal component first
What is rationale of Normal Timing (NT)?
Irradiation and quick stretch superimposed on contracting muscle will enhance firing of spindle afferent and increase alpha motor neuron response
When to apply Normal Timing (NT)?
Having difficulty recruiting distal components of movement pattern because of impaired coordination
What is Rhythmic Rotation (RR)?
Therapist slowly and passively moves extremity and trunk through increments of range while slowly rotating and derotating the body part
What is rationale of Rhythmic Rotation (RR)?
Slow rhythmical motion inhibits reticular activating system and stimulates parasympathetic nervous system
Inhibition`
When to apply Rhythmic Rotation (RR)?
Increase mobility if hypertonia, tissue tightness, pain in extremities/trunk
What is Rhythmic Initiation (RI)?
PROM –> AAROM –> AROM
What is rationale of Rhythmic Initiation (RI)?
Inhibits arousal of RAS and calms patient
When do you apply Rhythmic Initiation (RI)?
Mobility and controlled mobility
Patient has difficulty initiating active movement or lacks PROM
May be indicated for patients with spasticity or rigidity
What is Repeated Contractions (RC) / Repeated Stretch?
Patient isotonically contracts within weak pattern, isometric contraction of whole pattern asked for at point of weakness, quick stretch applied
What is rationale of Repeated Contractions (RC)?
Inhibition of dominant muscle group by reciprocal inhibition
When to apply Repeated Contractions (RC)?
Weakness through any part of range to increase mobility, stability, and controlled mobility
What is Timing for Emphasis (TE)?
Resist strong components isometrically to promote overflow to desired component where isotonic contraction is facilitated
What is rationale for Timing for Emphasis (TE)?
Irradiation and quick stretch will enhance firing of spindle afferent and increase alpha motor neuron response
