PNF Exercises Flashcards
What is facilitative stretching?
Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) is the combination of muscle contraction and stretching.
How do you perform Contract-Relax/Hold-Relax (CR) and HR) ?
- Take segment to feeling of stretch, hold for 10 -30 seconds
- Have patient perform a submaximal isometric contraction for 5-10 seconds
- Have patient relax muscles
- Take segment into newly gained range, up to stretch, no pain
- Repeat/Hold
- Last stretch is held for 30 seconds
What is the difference between CR and HR?
HR- The target muscle is contracted isometrically
CR- The axial rotators of the limb are allowed to contract concentrically. All other mm groups are to be contracted isometrically.
How do you perform Agonist Contract (AC)?
- Patient concentrically contracts the (agonist) the muscle opposite the range-limiting muscle.
- Hold the end range position for 10 seconds
- All motion is controlled by the client and is deliberate and slow.
- Rest (Return to neutral) to avoid mm cramping
- Repeat
The only type that can be used for spasm
How do you perform Contract-Relax-Contract (CRC)?
- Therapist moves segment into position of tissue resistance, hold for 10-30 seconds
- Have patient perform an 5-10 second isometric contraction of the target mm
- Relax target muscle
- Immediately concentric contract the muscle that opposes the action of the - Target / performs the range you are trying to increase (10 seconds)
- Repeat
- Hold last stretch for 30 seconds
What are the precautions to CR?
The patient does not need to perform a maximal isometric contraction. It should be sub-maximal to avoid Valsalva Maneuver and a spike of blood pressure.
What are the precautions to AC?
Avoid full range, ballistic movements when performing concentric contractions of agonists.
Rest after each repetition to avoid cramping of agonist.
