Pneumonia Flashcards
Etiology of pneumonia
infection or inhaled inflammatory agent
Where does pneumonia occur
alveoli and bronchioles
Patho of pneumonia
- pathogens enter
- WBC arrive causing capillary leak, edema, exudate
- exudate collects, alveolar walls thicken and lungs stiffen, diffusion impaired
Hospitalization rate of pneumonia
20-50%
more common pneumonia: community or nosocomial
community
what is the most common cause of sepsis
pneumonia
type of pneumonia: consolidation in a segment or lobe
lobar
type of pneumonia: scattered patches all around the lungs
bronchopneumonia
Most common pathogens in pneumonia
Haemophilous influenzae, streptococcus pneumoniae
not responsible for on the test, but should know
Hospital acquired pneumonia criteria
two days after admission (less than two days it was probably incubating at time of admission)
lung infection that develops in a person who is on a ventilator
ventilator-associated pneumonia
Sequence of pneumonia vaccine
Prevnar first, pneumovax 12 months later
pneumonia complications
sepsis, empyema, pleural effusion, lung abscess/necrosis, death
empyema
exudate in the pleural cavity
positioning patient
HOB up, rotate frequently for pressure injuries. Therapy: Bad lung up so the junk can come up and lung can expand, but it may cause hemodynamic instability. Prone patient to allow both lungs to expand more easily (COVID pneumonia)
