1
Q

describe how the velocity of an object can be found using light gates

A
  • set up light gates vertically and measure distance between them
  • connect them to a data logger and drop an object from rest above them, measuring the time it takes for the object to travel between the two gates
  • use distance and time to calculate velocity

Q

describe how to use light gates to investigate conservation of motion

A
  • place 2 carts on a linear air track with repelling magnets so they don’t stick to each other
  • attach card to the top of each cart so that they break the beams of the light gates when the pass
  • keep one cart stationary and push the other towards it, measuring its velocity before the collision
  • then measure the velocity of both carts after the collision and calculate the momentum before and after

Q

what is terminal velocity?

A

when forces on a falling object (drag & weight) become balanced so the resultant force is zero, acceleration is also zero and the object is moving at maximum velocity

Q

why does an object submerged in fluid experience upthrust?

A

the pressure on the bottom surface is greater than the pressure on the top surface
