Pluralists Flashcards
Media Professionalism
Pluralists argue editors wouldn’t allow owners to compromise their independence and wouldn’t be biased (proof- news have criticised politicians and caused them to resign- President Nixon)
State control
Media owners are restricted by the State or government controls (E.g some governments restrict owners owning too many different types of media)
Public Service Broadcasting
A significant share of media in the UK is PSB, meaning its controlled by the state and have to cater to every opinion (E.g BBC has to inform, educate, and entertain the full audience)
Media as a Democratic Mirror
The large amount of diverse media production, means everyones views are being catered for, and if some viewpoints have a larger presence online this represents what the audience sees as important
The Market Model
The idea that media companies compete against each other to try and attract people against each other to try and attract people to their products- therefore consumers hold the power as they chose what they buy
Curren
(evaluation of Pluralism) Argues there is evidence that media owners undermine newspapers through choosing editors and firing journalists with different views. He also found editors and journalists self censor their reports to avoid controversial conversations
Illusion of Choice
(evaluation of Pluralism) It’s difficult for people to decide what they want to see and hear in media if the media providers are their only source of information. Also powerless groups don’t have the resources to set up media companies
