Pluralist society Flashcards
Pluralist society
diverse society where minority groups maintain their independent cultural traditions and all members of society tolerate each others beliefs even when they do not match their own
UK is a multicultural society- ‘Laws of the country and other members of society shape our lives, when the state changes the law this may change our views and behaviour’
LGBTQ+
LGBTQ+ rights have developed as a result of a shift in societal views
-pre 1957 homosexuality was a criminal offence in UK
The Wolfenden Report 1957, contained info on the unfair imprisonment of homosexuals and this led to the Sexual Offences Act 1967 which decriminalised homosexuality
2001- age of consent in homosexual relationships was brought in line with heterosexual relationships
The Policing and Crime Act 2017 gave posthumous pardons to the thousands of homosexual men that were convicted under the old law
Same Sex Marriage Act
LGBTQ+ AO3
More in line with heterosexual rights than they have ever been
-morally right
-law has been developed with issues such as fertility treatments and equality for people with disabilities and for gender
Under Gender Recognition Act 2004 a person can change their sex on their birth certificate
-come about to a shift in the attitude of society overtime
However
law hasnt been updated enough
it is in line with the moral viewpoint that only men can commit rape
some may see this as illogical and argue it needs updating
