Plumbing and Sanitary Systems - JACB Flashcards
Three major phases/processes that water undergoes in the water cycle
Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation
The process by which water is given off to atmosphere from vegetation.
Transpiration
Give three other forms of precipitation other than rainfall.
Snow, Hail, Sleet
The movement of precipitation through soil after entrance into the ground.
Percolation
Water found in the Zone of Saturation.
Ground Water
The water-bearing stratum or formation.
Aquifer
Types of wells.
Artesian, Shallow, Bored, Jetted, Driven, Drilled
Types of aquifers (soil types that absorb water).
Sand, Sandstone, Gravel
Two common types of flexible pipes for water distribution.
Polyethylene (PE) and Polybutylene (PB)
Two common types of pump used for bored and drilled wells.
Piston and Centrifugal
Type of shut-off valve with fixed inlet and outlet.
Globe Valve
Pipe fitting used to avoid backflow of water.
Check Valve
Pipe used for hot water distribution.
UPVC (Rigid), PE and PB (Flexible)
Considered the safest/purest source of natural water.
Rain Water
Type of self-acting valve used to close off water supply inlet in the storage tank when the designated level is reached.
Float Valve
Method to reduce odor in water.
Aeration
Trigger switch in a multi-point heater that requires minimal pressure.
Flow Switch
A type of valve commonly used for supply pipes of fixtures for purposes of maintenance and repairs.
Angle Valve
Type of well that can provide good quality water.
Drilled Well
Pipe fitting used to join 2 pipes already set in place.
Union (Patented)
True or False: A 30psi pressure can bring up water up to 10 storeys or 31.70 meters.
False (45psi)
True or False: The probability of simultaneous use of fixtures depends on the total fixture units involved.
True
True or False: A check valve can also be used to join two similar pipes together.
True
True or False: A spring valve is a type of check valve.
True
True or False: A flow switch operated heater is commonly preferred because of its economical use.
False
True or False: Six (6) meters is the commercial length of most flexible pipes.
False
True or False: A fixture unit is equivalent to 8 liters of water discharge per minute interval.
False (7.5gal - 8gal)
True or False: A urinal discharges 5 gallons of water per operation.
False (5FU = 40gal)
True or False: A solar heater is more economical in the long-term use.
True
True or False: A multi-point heater requires more hot water pipe than a single-point water heater.
