polluted water
supply of purified water to a community
water supply
a hole drilled or bored into the earth to obtain water, petroleum or natural gas
well
a geological formation containing or conducting groundwater (capable of providing water in usable quantities)
aquifer
a well in which water rises from under pressure from a permeable stratum overlaid by impermeable rock
artesian wall
a reservoir or tank for storing and holding water (rainwater)
cistern
water fit for human consumption
potable water
the act or process of making water more potable or useful by purifying etc.
water treatment
a natural or artificial place where water is collected and stored for use (water supplying a community)
reservoir
tower into which water is pumped to a height sufficient to maintain a desired pressure for distribution to customers or firefighting
water tower
a main pipe or conduit through which a public or community water systems conveys water to all service connections
water main
a valve controlling the flow of water or gas from a main to a service pipe
corporation stop or cock
a control valve for shutting off the water supply to a building in case of an emergency
curb cock or curb stop
a vertical enclosure w/ removable cover providing access to a curb cock. also known as buffalo box
curb box
a pipe connecting a building to a water or gas main, usually installed by or under the jurisdiction of a public utility
service pipe
any valve for shutting off the flow the flow of water or gas from a supply pipe
shut off valve
a device for measuring and recording the quantity of water that passes through a pipe
water meter
water supply system in which water is distributed from a water main or an enclosed storage tank under pressure from compressed air
upfeed distribution system or pneumatic water supply
an apparatus that removes calcium and magnesium salts from hard water by ion exchange in order to give the water more efficient sudsing ability w/ soap
water softener
water is pumped into a large tank on top of the building and is distributed to the fixtures by means of gravity
downfeed/overheadfeed system
any member of a piping system other than main, riser or stack
branch
a vertical pipe, conduit or duct in a utility system
riser
a principal pipe, conduit or duct in a utility system
main
an expansion joint of pipe and its fittings permitting thermal expansion to occur a long run of hot water piping
expansion bend/loop
a threaded exterior for attaching a garden hose
hose bibb/ hosecock/ sillcock
a device for controlling the flow of a liquid from a pipe by opening or closing an orifice
faucet/spigot/tap
designed to be attached to or hung from a wall
wall-hung
a flush toilet that uses no more than 1.6 gallons (6L) of water per flush
low-flow toilet
fixture consisting of a ceramic bowl w/ a detachable, hinged seat and lid and a device for flushing w/ water
water closet/toilet
valve that supplies a fixed quantity of water to fixtures for flushing purposes when actuated by direct water pressure
flushometer valve
a compartment in a water system containing air that elastically compresses and expands to equalize the pressure and flow of water in the system
air chamber
an outlet, pipe or receptacle for excess liquid
overflow
a flow of a liquid opposite to the usual or desired direction
back flow
a backflow of used or contaminated water from a plumbing fixture into a pipe supplying potable water due to negative pressure in the pipe
back-siphonage
a valve preventing flowing liquid such as sewage from reversing its direction
backwater valve/backflow valve
a cylindrical trap close on the bottom and having a cover plate for access, usually installed on the drain line from a bathtub
drum trap
a toilet bowl in which the flushing water enters through the rim and siphonic action initiated by a water jet draws the contents of the bowl through the trapway
siphon-jet
a toilet bowl similar to the siphon jet but having a smaller water surface and trapway
reverse trap
similar to siphon jet but having the flushing water directed through the rim to create a vortex that scourts the bowl
siphon-vortex
toilet bowl having a simple washout action and emptying through a small, irregular passage
wash down
any device controlling or stopping the flow of liquid or gas by a movable part that opens partially obstructs or shuts a passage etx
valve
a valve with a globular body closed by a disk seating on an opening in an internal wall
globe valve
a shutoff valve closed by lowering a wedge shaped gate across the passage
gate valve
a globe valve having an outlet at a right angle to the inlet
angle valve
a washerless valve opened by aligning holes in a disk, cylinder or ball
alignment valve
valve permitting a liquid or gas to flow in one direction only
check valve
the extension of a soil or waste stack above the highest horizontal drain connected to the stack
stack vent
a vent the provides circulation of air between a drainage and a venting system by connecting a vent stack to a horizontal drain between the first fixture and the soil or waster stack
relief vent
a circuit vent that loops back and connects with a stack vent instead of a vent stack
loop vent
single vent serving two fixtures drains connected at the same level
common vent
a vertical vent installed primarily to provide circulation of air to or from any part of a drainage system
vent stack
a vent connecting a fixture drain to a main or branch vent
individual vent
vent serving two or more traps and extending from in front of the last fixture connection of a horizontal branch to the vent stack
circuit vent
vent installed on the sewer side of a trap
back vent
vertical vent formed by a continuation of the drain line to which it connects
continuous vent

soil stack
vertical waste pipe
waste stack
a device (a type of trap) designed to intercept most greases and solids before they enter a wastewater disposal system.
grease trap
is that unit of plumbing system that conveys rain or storm water to a suitable pipe.
