Summarise Chapter 1 - Story of the Door
Sunday:
-Mr Enfield tells Utterson that he saw Mr Hyde knock down and trample upon a young girl late at night
-Hydde was pressed into giving compensation for her injury
-Enfield realises that Hyde is an acquaintance of Jekyll’s
Summarise Chapter 2 - Search for Mr Hyde
That evening:
-Utterson is worried about Jekyll’s will, which leaves his property to Hyde if he should disappear or die
-He visits Dr Lanyon to see if he knows anything about Hyde
-Instead he finds out that Jekyll and Lanyon had fallen out over an argument about scientific ideas
-Utterson has a dream in which Hyde attacks children and threatens Jekyll
-Utterson then waits by the cellar door to meet Hyde
Summarise Chapter 3 - Dr Jekyll was quite at ease
A fortnight later:
-Utterson raises the topic of the will with Jekyll who makes him promise to look after Hyde
Summarise Chapter 4 - The Carew murder case
Nearly a year later:
-Sir Danvers Carew is murdered by Hyde who has fled
Summarise Chapter 5 - Incident of the Letter
Late in the afternoon:
-Utterson finds Jekyll looking ill and horrified at what Hyde has done
-He shows Utterson a letter from Hyde
-Utterson then discovers that the handwriting looks like Jekyll’s
Summarise Chapter 6 - Remarkable Incident of Doctor Lanyon
-Utterson, Lanyon and Jekyll enjoy each other’s company again
-Then Jekyll suddenly refuses visitors
-Utterson visits Lanyon who is dying as a consequence of a terrible shock
-Utterson receives a letter from Lanyon that is not to be opened until Jekyll is dead or disappears
Summarise Chapter 7 - Incident at the window
A Sunday later:
-Enfield & Utterson walk past the rear of Jekyll’s house and find him at the window of the laboratory
-He is friendly at first then rushes away as a look of horror appears upon his face
Summarise Chapter 8 - The last night
One evening at dinner:
-Poole, Jekyll’s servant, asks Utterson to help as he fears that Jekyll has been murdered
-They break into the laboratory area of the house
-Hyde has committed suicide and us dead on the floor
-There is no sign of Jekyll, Utterson finds a letter addressed to himself from Jekyll
Summarise Chapter 9 -Dr Lanyon’s narrative
FLASHBACK EPISODE - SAME TIME PERIOD AS CHAPTER 6
-The letter from Lanyon tells of a letter from Jekyll mysteriously asking for help to get chemicals for him from his house for him
-Hyde comes to collect the chemicals and performs the transformation in front of Lanyon
Summarise Chapter 10 - Henry Jekyll’s full statement of the case
FLASHBACK TO JEKYLL’S YOUTH AND COVERS ALL ASPECTS OF THE NOVEL
-This letter gives a chronological account of Henry Jekyll’s life
-It explains how his experiments led to the separation of the good and bad sides of his character
-The bad part Hyde, then takes control of his shared life
