Plot
A short story or novel consists of several basic events that form a narrative.
Narrative
Basic events from the plot.
Conflicts
Events that must be resolved
Exposition
The important background information at the beginning of a narrative.
Rising Action
The incidents leading up to the climax
Climax
The point at which the story’s suspense, emotions, and tensions peak.
Suspense
Details that make the story’s emotion
Comedy
A type of description given to something funny.
Tragedy
A type of description given to something sad.
Falling Action
Causes behind the rising action
Denouement
Shortest part of the plot where conflict reaches ending
Resolution
Unresolved or ending parts of a story.
In medias res
Meaning “in the middle of the action”
Flashback
A story from a prior time
Foreshadowing
hints at events coming up.
