Plot
Arrangement of events in a narrative.
Narrative
A spoken/written account of events- A (short) story.
Conflicts
The tension, struggle, or opposition that drives a plot.
Exposition
Contextual and background information told to readers about characters, plot, setting, and situation.
Rising Action
The events, marked by increasing tension and conflict building up to a story’s climax.
Climax
The point in a story when the conflict reaches it’s highest intensity.
Suspense
A literary device that uses tension to make the plot more thrilling.
Comedy
Used to refer to a dramatic work that has amusing plot.
Tragedy
A serious dramatic work in which the protagonist experiences a series of unfortunate reversals due to some character trait.
Falling Action
The result of the climax or turning point.
Denouement
AKA the phrase “Untying the knot.” - It’s a phase of a plot, the conflict is resolved and balance is restored.
Resolution
The working out of a plot’s conflicts, following the climax.
In Medias Res
Latin for “In the middle of things,” A technique when a narrative begins in the middle of action.
Flashbacks
A scene in a narrative that is set in an earlier time than the main action.
Foreshadowing
A plot device in which future events are hinted at.
