Prologue (introduction)
Antigone and Ismene discuss Creon’s edict (decree); Antigone reveals her thoughts and plan to defy Creon; ismene refuses to help.
Key Themes: Family Loyalty, individual vs state, moral duty
Scene 5: Teiresias’ Warning
Teiresias warns Creon that the God’s are angry with him for not allowing Polynices to be buried and for condemning Antigone. Predicts the disaster that is to happen if Creon doesn’t change his course.
Key Themes: divine intervention, pride, fate
Scene 1: Creon’s Decree
He address the chorus, explains his decision to deny Polynices a burial. Guard reports the burial.
Key Themes: authority, loyalty, conflict between public and private duty
Scene 3: Creon and Haemon Argue
Haemon (Creon’s son, Antigone’s fiance) confronts Creon and tried to persuade him to be more lenient and understanding. Creon refuses and Haemon warns him that the people sympathize with Antigone.
Key Themes: generational conflict, Loyalty, love vs. authority
Exodus (final scene): Tragic Consequences
Creon finally relents and tries to free Antigone and bury her brother but is too late. Antigone has killed herself and Haemon, in grief, kills himself as well. Upon hearing this Eurydice kills herself too. Creon experiences profound suffering.
Scene 2: Antigone is Caught
She is caught in the act of reburying her brother and brought to Creon. Admits to her crime and defend her actions (regardless of death).
Key Themes: Confrontation between moral and civic law, gender roles, defiance
Scene 4: Antigone’s Final Lament
Antigone is led to her death and laments her fate. Mourns the fact that she will die young, unmarried, and without a family.
