Chapter 2 summary

A

Search for Mr Hyde
After talking to Lanyon, he finds that he disagrees with Jekyll. Intrigued (as Jekyll’s will is for Hyde), he searches for Mr Hyde. He finds him by the door, and talks to him. Jekyll isn’t at home when Utterson wants to talk to him, but Poole says that they have orders to obey Hyde.

A

Dr Jekyll Was Quite at Ease
Utterson goes to a dinner party at Jekyll’s house. Confronts Jekyll about his will, but Jekyll isn’t bothered. Jekyll doesn’t want Utterson to bring it up again.

A

The Carew Murder Case
Maid witnesses Hyde murder Sir Danvers Carew (politician). Utterson confirms the body. Also, he goes (with some police) to Hyde’s house, where they find the place to have been “hurriedly ransacked” (cheque book still there)

A

Incident of the Letter
Utterson goes to Jekyll’s lab. Jekyll says he is done with Hyde, and gives Utterson a letter. Although he says a messenger delivered it, Poole confirms no messenger came that day. Mr Guest the calligrapher confirmed that it was signed by Jekyll forging as Hyde.

A

Incident of Dr Lanyon
Hyde’s definitely gone. Jekyll is happy religious and chill with Lanyon. 12th of January closed off again. Lanyon says he will die soon. Jekyll isolates himself. Lanyon dies, his letter only to be opened when Jekyll dies/ disappears

A

Incident at the Window
Utterson and Enfield walking together. They talked to Jekyll at the window. He said he couldn’t leave, when suddenly “the smile was struck out of his face”. Utterson and Enfield left in silence, traumatised.

A

The Last Night
Scared Poole visits Utterson, then they both go to Jekyll’s house which is full of scared servants. Poole & Utterson go to Jekyll in the lab, but hear “a voice”. They decide to barge in as they think it’s Hyde. The footman goes to the back entrance, then Poole breaks the door in. They enter a neat and tidy room (blasphemies), but find Hyde’s body on the floor - suicide. Can’t find Jekyll, but there are letters on the table from him. Utterson leaves to read.

A

Dr Lanyon’s Narrative
10th January - recieved an urgent letter from Jekyll with specific instructions. He drove to Poole, got a locksmith and a carpenter to break in the lab door and get the contents of a drawer. Inside - salt, phial, book. Little man (Hyde) came later for Jekyll. Then, when Lanyon chose to see, Hyde transformed into Jekyll!!! Lanyon traumatised.

Chapter 10 summary

A

Dr Jekyll’s Narrative
Jekyll born rich and good, soon thinking man should be 2. So he created Hyde, building a life for him (house, bank account). One day, slept as Jekyll but woke as Hyde. Knowing he had to choose, he chose Jekyll. One day, Hyde killed Carew and fled the house. Hyde v Jekyll for control of the body. Lanyon found out, Jekyll knows he’s doomed as he can’t control these transformations - suicide is an escape. The salt ran out (not pure - used impure version first). He accepts his death and signs the letter.
