Pliny - Zosimus Flashcards
Who is this letter to? What is it about?
To his friend Paulinus
Asking him to look after his sick freedman Zosimus at his estate
NOTE - since zosimus isn’t a slave anymore, pliny doesn’t have to look after him -> but chooses to anyway, showing kindness
Quote - Pliny cares about his household
“I shall confess to you with what tenderness I treat my household” - suggests deep care and love for entire household
How does Pliny feel about Zosimus’ poor health?
He is very distressed - as though a close family member was ill
Quote x 4 - Pliny’s opinion of and feelings about Zosimus
“He is an honest man, conscientious, educated” - praises Zosimus for his skills and education - also shows Pliny knows him quite well
Pliny has “long felt affection for this man” - he loves the freedman (like family)
“He is so thrifty” - also restricts himself from luxury and things “necessary for good health” - some of Pliny’s affection comes from Zosimus’ self control/modesty - Pliny has shown he values this in other letters
What does Pliny think of Zosimus’ profession (and what is it)?
Zosimus is an actor - which is a condemned profession in Rome (infamis)
Pliny doesn’t condemn him, praises him instead for his talent in acting
What did Pliny do when Zosimus was first ill? And what was the sign of Zosimus being ill?
Zosimus began to spit blood
Pliny sent him to Egypt to recover (which he did) - showing Pliny has helped him with his health before - truly cares about his wellbeing (emphasised by the fact he spent money on him)

He believes that “the air is healthy” - again showing his love of the countryside
