Pleural Ultrasound Flashcards
Which is the most superficial pleura
Parietal
Which is the less superficial pleura
Visceral
What is the glide sign
The 2 pleura moving over one another- should be smooth- some lumps normal particularly for large animals living in dusty condition
what are reverberation artefacts
Lots of straight lines coming off the pleura- shows whether pleural surface is smooth
2 probes that are used for pleural ultrasound
High frequency linear or micro convex
3 examples of pathologies seen on pleural ultrasound in small animals
Fluid in chest
pneumothorax
thoracic disease
2 examples of pathologies seen on pleural ultrasound in farm animals
bovine respiratory tract disease
pneumothorax
3 examples of pathologies seen on pleural ultrasound in horses
severity of equine asthma
pleural effusion
pneumonia with consolidated lung
how should lung surface appear on ultrasound
vertical with no surface consolidation
What do white artefacts indicate on pleural ultrasound
Oedema
What is shred on pleural ultrasound
consolidated lung with air bronchogram- white lines within where air is trapped in bronchioles)
What are tissue signs in pleural ultrasound
solid pieces of consolidated tissue where there is no air left in them
What could nodules seen in pleural ultrasound be
abscess, granuloma, neoplasia
What could fluid seen on pleural ultrasound be
Chyle, transudate (heart failure),exudate (pleuropneumonia), abscess/pus
Will collect ventrally- examine patient in ventral recumbency
What is seen in ultrasound on pneumothorax
Will see thicker parietal pleura
Line won’t glide
