The judge must advise a defendant personally of the nature of the charge to which the plea is offered, the critical elements of the offense, the maximum possible penalty, and any mandatory minimum penalty.
This advice must appear on the record.
The defendant must also be advised that he or she has a right to plead not guilty, and that by pleading guilty, he or she waives their right to a trial.
