Describe two movement phrases performed by the male dancer in the dance ‘play with fire’
- The male dancer performers a repeating sequence in ‘Play with fire’, where he points to himself with his right arm, his body facing us. He then brings his left arm over his head and his left hand covers his right hand, before rotating his arms in a figure of eight before slowly transitioning into a ‘strong man pose’. Simultaneously, he changes his direction from being in a jazz forth (with right leg infant) facing stage left and turns 180 degrees to face stage right in a lunge position.
- The male dancer performs the Rooster strut
Explain how one of the above movement phrases relates to the specific themes of the dance ‘play with fire’
The significant ‘Rooster Strut’ movement clearly embodies the theme of male chauvinism, as he’s marking his importance and dominance over the female within the duet.
