Play 4: The Pathway Flashcards
Who is ‘The Pathway’ for?
HT (Headteacher) and DHT (Deputy Headteacher).
What is ‘The Pathway’ at KS3 and KS4?
Pathways set formative targets for Key Objectives (KOs) using the DPR. Students start with a pathway based on prior attainment. Content is adapted to provide tailored learning objectives to achieve end-of-KS4 outcomes.
What is ‘The Pathway’ at KS5?
KS5 has only one pathway, and content does not need adaptation. Teaching is aimed at the highest level since course entry is regulated during enrolment.
Why is ‘The Pathway’ important?
Ensures formative assessment is tailored to individual student pathways. Customises the level of challenge within academic goals. Allows teachers to deliver a challenging curriculum while holding students accountable for their learning.
What are the different pathways and their grade expectations?
Pathway X: Students can achieve at least a grade 8 or equivalent. Pathway A: Students can achieve at least a grade 7 or equivalent. Pathway B: Students can achieve at least a grade 6 or equivalent. Pathway C: Students can achieve at least a grade 4 or equivalent. Pathway D: Students can achieve at least a grade 1 or equivalent. Pathway S: Tailored to individual learning needs, specifically SEND needs.
How are pathways assigned at KS3 and KS4?
Allocate pathways based on KS2 data. For students without KS2 data, administer a nationally benchmarked internal baseline test, e.g., GL assessments. Assign pathways based on assessment scores.
How is the pathway system different at KS5?
KS5 offers only a single pathway, where all students follow the same pathway regardless of their starting points.
How should pathways be monitored?
Assign students to class sets aligned with their pathways. Students should not be moved between sets due to behavioural issues. DHTs must ensure consistency in pathway expectations across subjects. Teachers can request pathway promotions for students, but this requires curriculum DHT approval. Students should only move down pathways in exceptional cases, with curriculum DHT approval.
What are the expectations regarding pathway assignments and exam tiers?
Pathway X, A, and B: Enter students for higher tier exams. Pathway C: Offers flexibility for higher or foundation tier entry. Pathway D: Designated for foundation tier entry. Tier entry must be strictly gatekept by the curriculum DHT.
What roles do DHTs, Subject Leads, and Line Managers play in maintaining pathways?
Ensure students are assigned the correct pathways. Gatekeep exam tier entry based on pathways. Maintain high expectations for consistency and alignment with pathway goals.
