Plato And Aristotle Flashcards
Plato’s form of the good
This is the world where you can gain true knowledge, if you can’t do so on earth

in this world everything is perfect
All concepts are perfect eg. Beauty and courage
School of Athens
Forms are unchanging
Everything has a form
Forms are the only true reality
The material world is always changing
Plato’s forms
They are ideal and perfect, singular versions of things.
World of Appearance - 3 features
Imperfect, always changing, physical
World of Forms - 3 features
Perfect, unchanging, spiritual
Reincarnation
Plato believed the soul is immortal even though the physical body may die - the soul renters a new body repeatedly (this is called reincarnation)
Forgetfulness
Plato believes we have an innate understanding of forms at birth - essentially we relearn them throughout life
The form of the good
Form of Good, Higher Forms, Lower Forms, Material Objects, Images
Form of the Good
The form of the good is goodness in itself, perfection
Ignorance
If someone knows the Form of the Good then they will behave in a good, moral way according to Plato. Ignorance is the cause of immorality.
Participating
The Pythagoreans were fascinated by ratio, so Plato believed the two realms are in the ratio of one another
Participating
Plato reasoned in the physical world we need: eyes to see objects and sun to illuminate objects - this correlates to the analogy of the cave
The higher forms
These are abstract concepts such as justice
The form of Beauty
We consider things beautiful, however since our world is ever changing, it is not true beauty.
