Q

What is the Plate Tectonics Theory?

A

Its (It’s It’s Miss) is the movement which occurs in the upper layers of Mantle which causes the rigid continental and oceanic crustal plates to move in various ways. This theory of how the plates move is known as the Theory of Plate Tectonics

Q

Who’s investigations firstly originated this and what did he suggest? ofc it’s a he🙄

A

This theory originated firstly from investigations by meteorologist Alfred Wegener(haha sounds like vinegar) who suggested that the continents and oceans as we see them did not always exist like this.

Q

What occurred throught Tectonic activity?

A

through tectonic activity they drifted apart i.e. Continental Drift Theory

Q

What does the theory of plate tectonics suggest about the Earht’s crust?

A

The theory of plate tectonics suggests that the Earth’s crust (oceanic and continental) are solid but broken up into smaller segments or plates. (just like my heart, brocken)

Q

What cause these plates to move and how do they move?

A

Convection currents caused by the movement of a semi-molten mantle causes these Plates to move in various directions as well as with varying speeds and energy. (fast and furious plate) (get it like 8)

Q

What do the convection current movements cause?

A

This results in changes to the Earth’s crust on the surface creating volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.

Q

Is the effect of these changes to the Earth’s crust hazardous? If they are, then to whom and what?

A

The effects of such events can be hazardous to the human and physical environment causing catastrophic effects and changes to the environment (hehehehe catatastrophic)

Q

What are the 3 major plate movements?

A

Divergent or Constructive Plates Boundaries, Convergent or Destructive Plate Boundaries and Transform or Neutral Plate Boundaries (wow the Earth has so many boundaries on its plate tectonics and humans just don’t take a hint huh?)

Q

What are Divergent or Constructive Plates Boundaries?

A

Plates that are moving apart away from each other, these cause volcanoes forming, or, when magma rises, it hardens to form shield volcanoes which act as islands like iceland (like spongebob teeth, he was always a constructive fella)

Q

What are Convergent or Destructive Plate Boundaries?

A

Plates are moving towards each other forming subduction or collision zones (like me+ you, quite destructive of us 😘)

Q

What are Transform or Neutral Plate Boundaries?

A

Plates that are sliding past each other causes built-up tension which when released causes earthquakes and tsunamis. (like me seeing you on the street, very neutral)

Q

What is subduction?

A

When a continental and an oceanic plate meet and move towards each other, but the oceanic is denser therefore it sinks under the continental plate, causing things like earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis on the earth’s surface

Q

What are collision zones/ collision plate boundaries?

A

When 2 continental plates collide but since they are the same density, they form folded mountains like the Himalayas instead of overlapping
