Plate tectonics & boundaries Flashcards
Alfred Wegener
A German scientist who came up with the theory of continental drift
Pangea
A supercontinent containing all of Earth’s land that existed about 225 million years ago.
Tectonic plates
Large movable plates under the Earth’s surface.
Convection Currents
Circular currents in the mantle caused by the magma being heated by the core off the Earth.
Plate boundries
the edges of tectonic plates
Sea Floor Spreading
The process where new oceanic crust is formed.
Subduction
One plate going under another plate
Primary waves (P-waves)
Travel the fastest through the Earth and can move through the solid and liquid layers of the earth
Secondary waves (S-Waves
slower-moving, waves that can only travel through solids
Continental drift
Theory that all of the continents on Earth used to be joined as one giant landmass before drifting apart
