Plate tectonics Flashcards
Name the layers of the earth
Crust, Mantle, Outer core, Inner core
What is the difference between continental and oceanic plates?
Continental plates are older, thicker and less dense.
Oceanic plates are younger, thinner and denser
What is a constructive plate boundary?
When two plates move apart and new crust is formed as the magma escapes to the surface.
Name parts of a volcano.
magma, lava, vent, crater, magma chamber, secondary vent and parasitic cone
Name the different types of plate boundaries
Destructive (including collision), constructive and conservative.
What are convection currents in the mantle?
Flow of magma in the mantle due to the unequal distribution of heat in the magma
How is a destructive plate boundary formed?
Two plates collide and the denser oceanic plate subducts under the lighter continental plate.
What is the difference between the focus and the epicentre of an earthquake?
The focus is where the earthquake originates and the epicentre is where it is first felt on the surface.
Name the THREE different shapes of volcanoes.
Composite
Shield volcano
Cinder cone
Where do you find earthquakes?
On any fault line, but especially at destructive and conservative plate boundaries
How could you prepare for an earthquake?
Evacuation drills, routes, build earthquake proof buildings, monitor slight plate movements, education
