Plate Tectonics Flashcards
what are the 3 different types of tectonic plate boundaries
divergent (constructive) convergent (destructive) and transform (conservative)
what happens at a convergent plate boundary
This occurs when plates move towards each other and collide. When a continental plate meets an oceanic plate, the thinner, denser, and more flexible oceanic plate sinks beneath the thicker, more rigid continental plate. This is called subduction. Or if two continental plates meet, they will collide and grow where they two plates met and form a mountain.
what happens at a divergent plate boundary
A divergent boundary occurs when two tectonic plates move away from each other. Along these boundaries, earthquakes are common, and magma (molten rock) rises from the Earth’s mantle to the surface, solidifying to create new oceanic crust.
what happens at a transform plate boundary
At a transform boundary, tectonic plates slide past each other in opposite directions, causing earthquakes, displacing rocks, and creating ridges and valleys along each side of the strike-slip fault.
what causes the plates to move
convection current
layers of the earth
core, outer core, mantle, crust
examples of the 3 boundaries
c= pacific ring of fire
d=mid atlantic ridge
t=san andreas fault
2 types of crust
oceanic and contenental
Explain why the physical states of the inner and outer core differ.
inner core is hotter than the outer core
Explain why the overall amount of crust on Earth has stayed the same despite this destruction.
The lost surface is balanced by the formation of new oceanic crust along divergent margins by seafloor spreading,
what layer of the earth are rocks formed and deformed
crust (lithosphere)
