Plate tectonic theory Flashcards
4 stages of Paleomagnetism
1) Iron rich magnetic minerals such as magnetite are present in basaltic flows
2) When the materials temperature cools below the Curie temperature these materials become magnetized
3) The Earth’s magnetic field switches every 200,000-400,000 years
4) This creates symmetrical alternating bands of oppositely magnetised rock parallel to the plate boundary
(2) biological evidence
The Glossopteris plant has been found in Africa, Antarctica, Australia and S. America
Mesosaurus found in Africa and S.America
(3) Geological evidence
If you move the continents back to recreate Gondwana, all ancient glacier parts would fit
The fitting of S.America and Africa
Rock sequences in E.Canada similar to Scotland
