Plate Techtonics Flashcards
Structure of the earth
Crust, mantle ,core
What is all continents togeather called
Pangea
Major plate boundaries?
North american plate, Cocos plate, pacific plate,Nazca plate, juan de fuca plate, south american plate, african plate, Eurasian plate, indian and australian plate.
Epicentre
The point on ground above where an earthquake happens is called the epicentre
What is focus ?
The point along the fault line in the crust where an earthquake happens is the focus
Richter scale
Measures the strength of the earthquake
Mercali scale
Measures the impacts of the earthquake
Major volcanic hazards
Acid rain, ash fall, lahar , pyroclastic flow, lava dom, lava bombs ,eruption cloud, eathquakes and landslides
Lava Flows ?
Lava flows are hot molten magma that can reach 30mph and also destroy everthing in it’s path
Pyroclastic flow
Pyroclastic flow is very fast moving hot ash and rock that can reach upto 350mph and can burn everything moving in it’s path
Volcanic ash
Volcanic ash is the ash that’s formed after an explosion, which is hot and can damage everthing
Volcanic bombs
Volcanic bombs are hot, very thick molten rocks larger than 64mm diameter thrown out of a volcano
Lahars
Lahars are very violent mudflows or landslides mixed with ash, rock and water flowing of the side of the volcano
What is a supervolcano
A supervolcano is 1000x bigger than a regular volcano that has the potential to produce an eruption with major consequence on the global climate and ecosystem
