plate margins Flashcards
what happens on a constructive PM
-plates move away from eachother
-molten magma rises between the plates and cools to form solid rock
what happens when magma reaches the surface on a constructive PM
produces runny lava that spreads out before solidifying
what type of volcano does a constructive plate margin form
-shield volacno
What happens on a destructive PM
-oceanic and continental plates move towards eachother
-the dense oceanic plate is sub ducted under the continental plate and into the earths mantle where it melts
explain volcanic eruptions on a destructive plate margin
-can be very violent because the lava is thick and viscous(sticky)
what happens when pressure is released at destructive PM
-alot of friction causes pressure to build up and when the pressure is released, very violent earthquakes occur
Constructive PM
-plates move along side eachother
-plates move in same direction but different speeds
how do earthquakes occur on conservative plate margins
as plates move past eachother, friction causes em to become stuck.
eventually pressure builds up causing very violent earthquakes
why do volcanoes not occur on conservative PM
there is no gap or vent for magma to rise througu
